Items discussed:

Goals of the Manton Fire Safe Council were discussed. It was agreed that the Council priortize what it needs to accomplish and develop a mission statement that reflects those goals. Tom McCubbins stressed the importance that the Council's mission should be to protect the community from wildfire, and not to protect the individual property owner. He said that the council needs to develop the infrastructure to support defense.
Bob Lee suggested that the council look at all the things it would like to do, then decide what it can do. They include:

Developing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan:
Tom McCubbins of the Tehama County RCD advised the council that it is important to complete a Community Wildfire Protection Plan and to priortize our projects. He explained that grantors will be more inclined to fund projects when they see that we have thought about what we need to accomplish. Tom reported that the the Tehama County RCD web site has a new project map of Shasta, Tehama & Glenn counties. He said that the council could tie their projects to other projects on the map and increase their chances of obtaining funding for those projects.

Bill Poytress explained that he and his students are in the process of developing a map and that GIS analysis will drive the Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

Tom McCubbins suggested that the council review the Almanor Basin Fire Safe Council Plan and the Trinity County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (7MB). He said those plans are examples of well-written plans that address hazardous conditions, what assets to protect and the ways to protect those assets.

Chief Lefort suggested the following steps to complete a Community Wildfire Protection Plan:
      Develop the plan
      Organize the plan
      Staff the plan
      Direct the plan
      Control the plan
      Re-evaluate the plan

Educating the community about the importance of creating and maintaining defensible space:
Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jack Lefort suggested that the MFSC host a town meeting so Cal Fire representatives can talk about the mandated 100 clearance around homes and to educate people about firescape methods.

Chief Lefort suggested the council find ways to help people clear brush from their property if they are physically and financially unable to do it themselves.

Bob Lee suggested that the council help educate people so they won't accidentally start a fire.

The council discussed the possibility of individual landowners to work collectively to create defensible corridors.
